Discover the *** in you!!

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

Few days ago I saw a sign “Discover the Champion in you”. I thought it was an advertisement for some personal development courses or books … about building self-confidence, empowerment, etc.

I walked closer to the sign to have a better look on the details. It turned out it was an event organised by a Christian church. What a surprise! Well … ok … fair enough … A church can still organise a personal development seminar. But would it really be personal development or outreaching or edification?

This rings an alarm bell in my mind as I recall the Apostle Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians, particularly chapter 10-13. The churches in Corinth was infiltrated by the so-called “super apostles” – teachers who claimed superiority over Paul and promoted self-confidence over humility. They were promoting false teachings and turning the Corinthians away from Christ.

Paul in contrast promoted his weaknesses and meekness. He outlined his “superb” resume which includes being imprisoned, shipwrecked, escaping by being lowered in a basket over a city wall and his unattractive style of speech. All these make the power of God more evident in him. Not surprising that Don Carson’s commentary on 2 Corinthians 10-13 is rightly titled “From triumphalism to maturity”.

A more appropriate title is perhaps “Discover the SINNER in you and Seek the Champion in Christ”!!!

When it seems too good …

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

I saw an advertisement from ING on automatic savings plan. At the first glance, it seemed impressive and in fact too good to be real … so I did the math.

The ad showed that suppose I start with an opening balance of $5000, after one year with an interest rate of 6%, the closing balance is $5309. That’s a return of around $300. But if I use the automatic saving plan, depositing $100 per fortnight, the closing balance after one year is $7986. WOW!!! That looks impressive. It’s almost $8k … over 50% yield!!! … or is it??

If I do the math, I will discover that the total amount I put in is $7600 ($5k+$100*26). So the actual return from the interest is $386. It’s only about $80 difference compared to the first case. It doesn’t look that impressive now …

Or is there any flaw in my math??? Well … it’s already past 10pm. And I’ve been working on math for over 10 hours today.

Mother of vacuum cleaners

Monday, July 16th, 2007

We experienced the mother of vacuum cleaners yesterday. It was an amazing experience.

We went to visit the Godfreys store in Hurstville after seeing the special discount ads. We have been looking for a vacuum cleaner that picks up hairs and small fibres from rugs. Our current vacuum cleaner just doesn’t do the job even after brushing the rug with my full strength.

The Godfreys staff introduced us a Hoover model with powerhead. The powerhead has a motorised brush. Interestingly, the powerhead costs 4x than the vacuum cleaner itself. It is not actually huge like for commercial purposes. We thought we would give it a try anyway. So we grabbed one home….after paying for it of course.

At home, I immediately set it up and tried it on the big rug. Dude…..it was awesome!!! I didn’t even need to push it. The powerhead motor moves along the rug on its own…picking any thing that can be picked up. It only took a minute to clean the rug and it looks like brand new. It’s certainly worth the price. Plus the vac has HEPA filtration component which is proven useful for people with allergies or asthma.

One weird thing is that I keep getting an electrostatic discharge from the metal handle. I checked the handle and it is floating. There is no conductor that connects it to any metal in the powerhead or the vac body so it cannot be live. Mind you though the weather yesterday was quite dry. The brushing between the powerhead brush and the rug must have accumulated the static charge. I didn’t experience any static discharge when using the normal head. Perhaps I should ground the metal handle. The unfortunate thing is that the vacuum cleaner has double insulation so it has no ground connection to the GPO – no path for any discharge or leakage.

First jam with Guitar Hero

Friday, July 13th, 2007

Felt like it has been as a long day today…maybe because it’s Friday. A colleague brought in his Guitar Hero, plugged in to XBOX360. Not something new to me….seen some mid-puberty dudes playing it at stores. Later…I decided to give it a try….not until I felt my brain cells are depleting to a critical level.

The CEO set me up straight to the medium level….WOW…way too fast for me. I no longer had the eye-hand coordination since I hung my guitar after high school. I “begged” to try the easy level first. In the end, he allowed me…hey!!…it became very easy….I started to get the hang of the rhythm…after managed to relax. Half way through…I started feeling bored…maybe it’s time to go back to the medium level :P …..well not today. It’s time to go home. I’ll practice again next week :)

On the way out, my eyes caught the sight of the Gear of War lying on the table….Woohooo!!!….Guitar Hero will have to wait :D
