Few days ago I saw a sign “Discover the Champion in you”. I thought it was an advertisement for some personal development courses or books … about building self-confidence, empowerment, etc.
I walked closer to the sign to have a better look on the details. It turned out it was an event organised by a Christian church. What a surprise! Well … ok … fair enough … A church can still organise a personal development seminar. But would it really be personal development or outreaching or edification?
This rings an alarm bell in my mind as I recall the Apostle Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians, particularly chapter 10-13. The churches in Corinth was infiltrated by the so-called “super apostles” – teachers who claimed superiority over Paul and promoted self-confidence over humility. They were promoting false teachings and turning the Corinthians away from Christ.
Paul in contrast promoted his weaknesses and meekness. He outlined his “superb” resume which includes being imprisoned, shipwrecked, escaping by being lowered in a basket over a city wall and his unattractive style of speech. All these make the power of God more evident in him. Not surprising that Don Carson’s commentary on 2 Corinthians 10-13 is rightly titled “From triumphalism to maturity”.
A more appropriate title is perhaps “Discover the SINNER in you and Seek the Champion in Christ”!!!
