See the obvious

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

On the new year day, there was nothing much to do at home…apart from resting. I picked up a book “Household Gold” that a friend lent me a while ago and the book has actually been taking up dusk. It turns out to be an interesting book and I managed to read it through that day.

One of the main themes is asking the readers to “see the obvious”. I like the conclusion section where it quotes famous people who missed the obvious. For example:

Radio has no future. Heavier than air flying machines are impossible. X-rays will prove to be a hoax. I have not the smallest molecule of faith in aerial navigation other than ballooning. William Thomson, Lord Kelvin (1824-1907).

And of course the famous one:

There is a world market for about five computers. Thomas J. Watson, founder and first president, IBM Corporation.

My favourite is

Who would want to hear actors talk? Harry M. Warner, founder, Warner Bros. Studio (1927,considering talking pictures)

The conclusion section finishes with an intriguing remark:

Seeing the obvious is a matter of common sense, not
intelligence. Which is why smart people sometimes fail to see the
obvious. As a result, they sit on the sidelines while less talented
people are making a fortune.
