How low can a real estate agent go?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Raine & Horne Allawah started posting signs in people’s property to advertise themselves, not to advertise a property for sale or lease. We removed the sign from our property. The next day, a new one appeared. This is just a cheap and scandalous way of advertising driven by greed and desperation. How low can Raine & Horne go in the property boom? Way down to the bottom!

Solution to Chicony USB webcam in Toshiba A205 after installing Windows 7 RC1

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

I just installed Windows 7 RC1 in my Toshiba laptop A205. I received a notification that the built-in camera is not working. I checked the Device Manager. It said that there was a problem with the registry. I tried updating the driver but it said my latest driver was the latest one.

So I checked out some forum. One post suggested installing a driver from http://203.56.127.6/driver_download/Public//p2_all/ChiconyWebcam_v1.7.175.0123.exe. I gave it a go and it worked! Sweet! … I didn’t have to tinker around with the registry.

Solution to adding iframe in Joomla

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

I had a problem with adding iframe into Joomla editor. Whenever I pasted the iframe link from Google map in the HTML view and returned to the editor, the iframe line was removed. In my search for answer to solve this, I stumbled a discussion in http://www.joomlacontenteditor.net/forum/topic?f=17&t=14397 which discussed the same problem in JCE environment. JCE is Joomla content editor, an extensino to Joomla.

I decided to install JCE to give it a go. It solved the problem! Now, installing JCE is a bit tricky. The installation information is spread at different places. Here I’m putting together the steps to remind myself and help other people who may want to install JCE for the first time.

The steps to download the required components are
1. Goto http://www.joomlacontenteditor.net/downloads
2. Click the Administration Component link
3. Find com_jce_151.zip and download it (I’m using Joomla 1.5.2)
4. Go back to the download page
5. Click the Editor Plugin link
6. Find plg_jce_152.zip and download it
7. Go back to the download page
8. Click the Plugin link
9. Click the JCE 1.5.x link
10. Find jce_iframe_150.zip and download it

The installation steps are
1. Login to Joomla as admin
2. Goto Extensions -> Install/Uninstall menu
3. In Upload Package File section, browse to enter com_jce_151.zip. Then, click Upload File & Install
4. Afterwards, browse to enter plg_jce_152.zip and click Upload File & Install
5. Goto Components -> JCE Administration -> Install
6. In the Upload Package File section, browse to enter jce_iframe_150.zip and click Upload File & Install
7. Goto Site -> Global Configuration
8. Select Site
9. In Site Settings, change Default WYSIWYG Editor to “Editor – JCE 1.5.2″

When you edit an article, you will notice that the editor layout has changed.

Atheism/Agnoticism is a health hazard

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

In a recent Time magazine (Feb’09), I came across an interesting article suggesting that beliefs in a religion improve health.

Here are some summaries.

  • People who attend religious services tend to have lower risk of dying in any one year compared to those who don’t attend any religious services.
  • People who believe in a loving God tend to fare better after being diagnosed with an illness compared to those who believe in a punitive God.
  • According to Robert Hummer’s study, people who don’t attend religious services are twice at risk of dying over the next 8 years compared to those who attend weekly services.
  • According to Daniel Hall, church attendance correlates with 2-3 additional years of life.
  • There are benefits for having pastoral care in addition to medical care. But doctors are often slow in referring patients to spiritual counselors, e.g. hospital chaplain.

Ironically, recently in the UK, a nurse faced disciplinary action and possible unemployment for offering a prayer to a patient. The patient was not offended but the incident was reported and the nurse was suspended. She was later reinstated following some legal actions. Read the news here. Well, should the medical board have educated themselves with the latest health studies, they would have appreciated her above-and-beyond-call-of-duty commitment!
